Tips for gambling safely

  • ✓Treat gambling as paid entertainment, not a way to make money.
  • ✓Set a budget before you start and never go over it.
  • ✓Set a time limit and take regular breaks.
  • ✓Never chase losses or borrow money to gamble.
  • ✓Don't gamble when you're stressed, upset or have been drinking.
  • ✓Balance gambling with other activities and time with friends and family.

Warning signs of problem gambling

Gambling may be becoming a problem if you:

  • ✓spend more money or time gambling than you planned
  • ✓need to bet larger amounts to feel the same excitement
  • ✓try to win back money you have lost
  • ✓borrow money, sell things or miss bills to gamble
  • ✓hide your gambling from people close to you
  • ✓feel anxious, guilty or irritable about gambling

If any of these sound familiar, it's worth talking to someone. Help is free and confidential.

Tools to stay in control

Licensed casinos and sportsbooks must offer tools to help you manage your play. You'll usually find them in the account or responsible gaming menu:

  • ✓Deposit limits: cap how much you can deposit per day, week or month.
  • ✓Loss and wager limits: stop play once you reach a set amount.
  • ✓Session reminders: show how long you've been playing.
  • ✓Time-outs: lock your account for 24 hours up to several weeks.
  • ✓Self-exclusion: close your account for six months or longer. In the US, many states run statewide lists; in the UK, GamStop covers every licensed site.
