About Tim

Tim Reilly is senior fact-checker at silvergames.com, where he verifies and signs off news and editorial pieces before publication. He has worked in editorial fact-checking and financial audit for over a decade.

He checks release dates against publisher announcements, confirms studio acquisitions and layoff figures against filings and official statements, audits earnings and sales claims, and holds every piece to the publication's sourcing and corrections standards.

“Confirmed against the filing or the official statement, or it's labeled a rumor. If I can't source it, it doesn't get signed off.”

Ask Tim

How do you verify a release date?+
Against the publisher's own announcement or storefront listing, not a roundup. If it's only been reported second-hand, it's labeled as rumored until there's a primary source.
How do you check an acquisition or layoff figure?+
Against the filing, the press release or the official statement. Numbers that only appear in another outlet's story get attributed to that outlet, never presented as confirmed.
What stops a story getting signed off?+
A claim with no primary source, a figure that can't be reconciled with the filing, or a headline the body can't actually answer. Any of those, and it goes back before it runs.

What the editors say

“Tim is the last read before a story runs. If a figure can't be reconciled with the filing, it goes back — and the piece is better for it every time.”
